Spinal and Extremity Adjustments
Helpful for many conditions ranging from nerve compression disorders to the stiffness and pain associated with arthritic joints. Manual adjustments work best for most people. However, for children or elderly patients with osteoporosis or those who just don’t want to have their spine adjusted by hand, we use the the Arthrostim adusting device. This unit should not be confused with the single thrust units used by some practicioners. The Arthrostim is a very sophisticated electromagnetic device capable of delivering up to 14 light and rapid impulses per second. The gentle correction that the Arthrostim provides is due to its ability to produce a repetitive thrust and recoil that allows the joint nerve endings (mechanoreceptors) to be activated. This bombardment of input traveling up the cord creates beneficial changes by forming new neurological pathways (technically called synaptogenesis or neuroplasticity so that the midbrain can better communicate with the rest of the brain.

Acupuncture
Along with traditional acupuncture with single use disposable needles, we offer non-needle electro acupuncture utilizing electricsl probes. This type of non-needle treatment has been proven surprisingly effective. A recent article in Health Day News (5/12/2009) reported; “Any kind of acupuncture, whether it pierced the skin or not, eased chronic lower back pain in a group of adult patients. All were superior to usual care,” said Daniel Cherkin, lead author of a report published in the May 11 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine. “Acupuncture is an effective treatment for chronic back pain. People receiving acupuncture are more likely to get better.” This trial, the largest randomized one of its kind, was funded by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health. There are no answers to that question of how non-needle acupuncture can work so well, but some theories persist. It’s possible that the “superficial” acupuncture still kicks off a cascade of physiological processes that result in relief. You can stimulate a point with pressure, needle, electricity, even now with laser light and different frequencies of laser light. “Pecking” on a point is a Japanese technique for stimulation. This technique is often used with someone who is older or weak in their contitution.

Cold Laser
We use the ML830 laser which was introduced to the sport medicine arena during Super Bowl XXXVlll. Ellen Spicuzza R.N., who was treating New England players was quoted, “The laser was a key adjunctive therapy. No question it (laser) expedites healing of their (Patriots) sprains, strains, tinnitus and inflammations. Two of the players would not have played without the use of the laser.” (Jacksonville, FL PRNewswire 2/9/2005). Today more and more athletic trainers (including the South Alabama staff) have begun using the same ML830 unit. This non-invasive therapy is capable of penetrating deeper (5cm) into tissues than standard modalities such as ultrasound. Once delivered, the light energy promotes the process of photobiostimulation. In human tissue, the resuting photochemical reaction produces an increase in the cellular metabolic rate that expedites cell repair and the stimulation of the immune, lymphatic and vascular systems. The net result, observed in clinical trials to date, is the apparent reduction in pain, inflammation, edema, and an overall reduction in healing time. The ML830 has a wavelength of 830nm. A nanometer is a unit of length equal to one billionth of a meter.

Testimonials

When I have an appointment with Dr. Smith for acupuncture, he makes me very comfortable with the procedure. You would think that sticking needles into ones skin would not only cause a considerable pain, but extreme anxiety as well prior to the procedure. Not true; he does it so gently and quickly that you hardly notice it. I highly recommend acupuncture for all kinds of ailments, and Dr. Smith to do the procedure for you.
