COMMON SIGNS OF GERD

  • Heartburn, especially at night when lying flat.
  • Regurgitation of food or sour liquid.
  • Difficulty swallowing or sensation of a lump in the throat.

ACUPUNCTURE COMPARED TO MEDICATION

Using specialized impedance manometry which calculated the ratio of esophageal transit or emptying, researchers found that acupuncture techniques greatly improved the function of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) and the esophageal muscles. The LES prevents stomach acid from regurgitating back up into the esophagus. The same study also found that acupuncture also improves swallowing. At Back in Motion Chiropractic and Acupuncture in Daphne, our physician has over 30 years of experience in treating digestive problems like GERD and heartburn.

The most common medications used to treat GERD are known as protein pump inhibitors {PPI’s). This class of medications includes Nexium and Prilosec. Their effect is to inhibit the production of acid produced by the stomach lining by blocking acid pumps.

NATURAL TREATMENTS FOR GERD

  • Quit smoking and lose weight.
  • Eat slower and chew thoroughly. Too much liquid with meals lead to bloating and dilutes acid, so drink less during meal.
  • Study food combining techniques. A steak by itself is easier to digest than steak and potatoes together.
  • Avoid wearing tight fitting clothes.
  • Do not lie down following meals and elevate head of bed if possible.
  • Eat more fruit, especially bananas. The more ripened the bananas the better.
  • Drink ginger tea.
  • Milk has been known to help GERD but it is best to drink non-fat milk. The fat in whole milk may worsen the situation by stimulating the stomach to produce more acid.
